as soon as I login I get this:
$ ps aux | grep settings
gdm       2452  1.8  1.4  91308 11132 ?        Ssl  16:42   0:00 /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon --gconf-prefix=/apps/gdm/simple-greeter/settings-manager-plugins
luca      2576  1.8  1.4  99868 10852 ?        Ssl  16:42   0:00 /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon
luca      2791  0.0  0.1   4172   852 pts/0    S+   16:43   0:00 grep --color=auto settings

after more or less a minute (when the issue is visible) I get this:
$ ps aux | grep settings
luca      2576  1.4  1.4  99640 10796 ?        Ssl  16:42   0:00 /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon
luca      2794  0.0  0.1   4172   852 pts/0    S+   16:43   0:00 grep --color=auto settings
