[Bug 399238] [NEW] Intel GM965 poor graphics performance
You have been subscribed to a public bug:
After much time spent trying to get ubuntu 9.04 (desktop) to run on a
performance par with Vista, I have finally thrown in the towel.
I have a background in computing (architecture and OS) and have several
years at university and qualifications to back that up, so I think it's
fair to say that I know my way around computers. However, when the
graphics performance of my less-than two-year old laptop runs like a
ten-year old desktop, I have to ask myself how well developed ubuntu
really is.
Laptop: Acer 5720
Intel GM965 express mobile chipset with integrated graphics
Intel 2.00Ghz core two duo CPU
2GB dual channel memory
160GB hard drive
I am fully aware of the issues surrounding integrated Intel graphics and
I've installed numerous updates and even a new kernel, but when Vista
can provide circa 117 FPS in Planet Penguin (as an example) but the best
that ubuntu can manage is circa 19 FPS despite countless hours/days of
trying to improve things then there is clearly still a very serious
problem.
Nothing, and I mean nothing, would give me greater pleasure than moving
away from MS Windows, but the alternative has to be a workable solution.
Sadly, for me, ubuntu is not there yet. I do think ubuntu has great
potential, but at current rates of progress I think it will be several
versions into the future before it is a viable alternative for me.
The reason for registering and posting this is purely to provide
feedback, and let the ubuntu developers know that this issue needs
resolving before I (and from what I have read, many, many others) will
see ubuntu as a realistic OS choice.
I'll keep tabs on new releases but until I start reading about Intel
graphics performance issues being resolved I'll be giving ubuntu a miss.
