Thanks for this info.  Of the packages upgraded during that timeframe
(Apr 3-4), these are the relevant X/kernel packages that got upgraded:

libdrm2 2.4.23-1ubuntu6
grub-common 1.99~rc1-8ubuntu1
xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.14.0-4ubuntu6

grub is probably innocent.  The -intel change is adding a patch which
only affects 946gz chips, so that is probably safe.

The libdrm change brought in patch 100_intel_remember_named_bo.patch to
fix bug #747205, however in testing we did not find it actually seemed
to help.  The patch changed how buffer objects are handled, which I
could imagine could potentially result in a regression.  But I can't say
for certain that it is causing this.

Are you able to reasonably easily reproduce this bug?  If so, would you
mind testing downgrading of libdrm to the earlier version and see if the
freeze becomes unreproducible at that point?  If that's the case then we
can consider reverting the patch.

As a minimum you'll want libdrm-intel1, libdrm2, and libkms1.  The -dbg
variants may be worthwhile but I don't think will be necessary for
diagnosing this problem.  You can install all of the .debs from that URL
if that's more convenient, they don't conflict with each other.
