Subsequent investigation reveals that if I add the i915 module to the
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file and reboot the problem goes away.
Checking the Debian 6 partition on the same machine shows that Debian
does not attempt to load both modules, so the question is why does
Ubuntu?
