I tried  the kernel grub parameter "i915.modeset=0" and left my machine
for a day, and got no lockup/hang, when i would normally get atleast get
one.however it couldnt start gnome-shell and went straight into fallback
mode.

i am also trying http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v2.6.39-rc3-natty/ as bryce suggested, and it booted
without issue, some flickering however during boot, i have been using
that kernel, without the above kernel parameter, and no gpu lockup/hang
now after 4 hours. and gnome-shell started without issue.
