1. comment out the PPA from /etc/apt/sources.list
2. run "sudo apt-get update"
3. sudo apt-get -y install apt-show-versions
4. sudo apt-get install $(apt-show-versions | grep -v $(lsb_release -sc) |
grep -v "No available version in archive" | awk '{ printf "%s/%s
",$1,$(lsb_release -sc) }')

Verify the list of packages it says it wants to re-install in step 4, the
list of packages to re-install should be all the X server related packages
you see if you click the little arrow next to "xserver-xorg" on the PPA
