Has this issue occurred consistently since upgrading to natty or did it
start just recently?  Did it occur on maverick?  You say when the
scripts fail they fail different ways each time, can you elaborate?

Also, you could try installing this patched X driver from my PPA, which potentially could help with this family of hardware (let me know either way):
