FWIW:
I installed a new 2.6.31 Kernel as described here:
https://launchpad.net/~morgwai/+archive/intel-displayport

The last thing I saw (after disabling splash etc.) before my monitor went black was:
failure to load KMS module(s)

On a Lenovo X200 with a docking station.
