Well the "artifacts" have ceased to become a problem.  Several things
have happened.

1) I patched glib2.0 to resolve the 2nd monitor operational problems.

2) I discovered the obscure and onerous setting that was crashing compiz.

3) I have enabled compiz and am using the emerald window decorator. 

I think the bug might be with the GTK window decorator.

In any case, I'm happy.
