  Problem symptoms:

Visting a given webpage results in a java process that increases its
CPU% to 100%. When the browser is closed and the java process is killed
the "Xorg" process uses up much more CPU than average, approximately
30-70%. The whole desktop responds very sluggishly and all applications
are slow to open and respond. dropping out to a tty session
(CTRL+ALT+F1) and restarting gdm just sees the problem return. If I stop
gdm and wait approximately 15mins and then restart gdm everything goes
back to normal. Also if I leave the desktop for a very long time
(approximately 1 hour) things do settle down again and the
responsiveness of the desktop resumes to normal.

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Boot up PC and login to desktop as normal
  2. Login to VPN
  3. Open firefox
  4. Visit the problem website (internal site at my work, if I find a public one that invokes the same issue then I'll post it here)
  5. Use top to see the java process ramp up to 100% CPU, let this settle for a couple of minutes
  6. Close firefox and kill the java process
  7. Try to use some desktop applications, keep an eye on the terminal session running "top" and make a note of how much CPU is used each time you try to start another application (i.e. another terminal)
