Can you try a ubuntu classic (safe) session to see if it happens there
to confirm?

You can run xset dpms force off from a terminal a bunch of times to
force the dpms off event faster instead of waiting for gnome-power-
manager to turn it off from idling.

Alternatively you can test this kernel with the proposed fix for it in a
unity session
