After some more trying I found the following facts: Default kernel is vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic-pae,
but when I use vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic (i. e. without this physical address extension) it works
perfectly. Are there boot option which prevent a fglrx crash? 

If someone gives me some hints I could try more stuff, since I am not too experienced with kernel
fiddling.
