I have exactly the same problem, 
- The dock shows and works as expected, even semi translucent
- flying the mouse over shows the tool tips
- Clicking on the dock opens the corresponding application
- Dragging an application adds it to the dock
- Running an application shows the white indicators

The problem is that the icons do not show,

New installation 32 bit Ubuntu Natty 11.04

Using the experimental 3D driver with the following card:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX
5200] (rev a1)
