Okay from my previous post I was able to get Unity running again by
adding  UNITY_FORCE_START=1 to /etc/environment Big thanks to nathanvda
http://askubuntu.com/questions/37084/nvidia-driver-activated-but-
currently-not-in-use  But now I am back to a unity desktop with no
launcher icons, so kinda back to square one.
