Same problem. Very frustrating.

Fresh install of 11.04 64-bit. Card is GeForce GTX 550Ti. Activated the
recommended driver on first boot using Additional Drivers tool, set the
default UI to Classic Ubuntu. No sign of compiz anywhere and Additional
Drivers showing "The driver is activated but not currently in use."

lspci|grep nVidia:
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Device 1244 (rev a1)
02:00.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation Device 0bee (rev a1)

uname -a:
