I decided to give the latest Pre-released updates a try and voila it worked.  Fixed everything.  
Synaptic Package Manager: Settings -> Repositories -> Updates -> checked Pre-released updates (natty proposed).  Reloaded the packages, marked and applied all upgrades.  Hail Mary. 

I'm running the NVidia drivers supplied with the ubuntu distribution.
No more freeze ups and the other highly annoying issue that occurred
even in failsafe mode where the computer would fail to wake up after
going into sleep mode no longer happens.
