I keep trying to fix this without success. And I'm stuck with the same
message...

 a quick look at this issue shows that the nvidia module is not being
loaded at all (in my setup: nvidia 8600GT):

as you can see, the nvidia driver is not being loaded at all. So
basically nvidia is not working. There are experimental open source
drivers, but the oficial binaries are not working at all.

You can boot into Unity, before trying to enable the binary drivers I
was able to open Unity too (with a reaaally bad performance), but you
are NOT using nvidia drivers. "They are not currently in use" is not
just jockey not detecting them. it's because they are really not being
used.
