Actually, looks like from your Xorg.0.log that you do in fact have
-nvidia installed, loaded, and (apparently) operational.
Is the problem pasted in #2 accurate for the underlying issue you're
trying to solve? Also, we'd discussed downgrading unity, did you manage
to reproduce the issue on the earlier unity version?
