Jerry, I've packaged the patch that upstream says should fix this issue
and posted it to this PPA for you:

Please test and see whether that fixes it for you, and provide feedback
on the upstream bug.

If it does fix it, we possibly may be able to include it for karmic,
however anholt's comment in the patch makes it sound like it can cause a
hang on i865, which sounds sub-optimal, so if that's the case I'd want
to see that issue resolved before incorporating this patch.
