[Bug 817649] Re: Ubuntu 11.04 frequently freezes on boot with blank screen

This may be related to interaction with BIOS or the CPU's, KMS, etc.
This laptop has two GPU's. When I can successfully boot Ubuntu and
shutdown, on the next boot, I see a BIOS message (below). I never see
this message after shutting down Windows 7.

>From a cold system, early AM.

1. Boot Ubuntu - success
Selected shutdown - within 1 minute - the laptop is cold to touch - the air from the exhaust vent is room
     temperature, mid 60's(F).
Success - shutdown OK - powered off.
2. Wait 5 minutes
3. Power on - the laptop is cold to touch - the air from the exhaust vent is room temperature, mid 60's(F).
BIOS message that the system suspended or hibernated to avoid overheating
     System temperature (090D)
     System is operating normally.
     Pressed enter to continue
     Selected to Boot Ubuntu
     Hung with blank screen.
4. Wait 5 minutes
5. Hold power button until power off
6. Power on
7. Select boot windows 7 - Boot OK
8. Selected shutdown - OK powered down completely
9. Power on
10 Boot windows 7
11 Selected shutdown - OK completely powered down
12. Boot windows 7
13 Selected shutdown - OK completely powered down
14 Boot Ubuntu - OK
15 Selected shutdown - OK completely powered down
16 Power on
17 Got BIOS message as above

When I get the BIOS message, 8 out of 10 attempts to boot Ubuntu fail.
When I get the BIOS message after attempting to boot Ubuntu, I can always boot Wiindows 7.
I never see the BIOS message between attempts to boot Windows 7 and Windows 7 always succeeds.
