[Bug 821181] Re: package nvidia-current 195.36.24-0ubuntu1~10.04 failed to install/upgrade: nvidia-current kernel module failed to build

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

I notice you're running Ubuntu 10.04, and trying to install the NVidia
drivers for that version (nvidia-current 195.36.24). However, your
kernel version is 2.6.38-10, this is not the kernel that shipped with
Ubuntu 10.04 (that should have version 2.6.32-21 to 2.6.32-33). Thus, it
is possible that the nvidia drivers fail to compile because they weren't
written for the kernel you're running.

Is there a reason why you're not using the 2.6.32 kernel, or why you
haven't upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04, which does include the 2.6.38 kernel,
as well as NVidia drivers version 270.41.06 which are compatible with
kernel 2.6.38?

I could suggest two things, both to try to solve your problem and to
confirm my hypothesis.

First would be for you to install and boot the 2.6.32 kernel for Ubuntu
10.04, then retry installing the NVidia drivers. However given the
newness of your NVidia card, it might be that it it not supported by
that version of the driver.

Second, if at all possible, would be to upgrade your system to Ubuntu
11.04, and then try to install the drivers that the stable 11.04 release
will suggest.

Please do let me know whether these suggestions work, as it will let me
know how to classify this report.

Thanks!
