The workaround is to add
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset" to /etc/default/grub.
(however, then I lose all desktop effects, ability to rotate screen, and no Unity, etc)

I've hade this problem since at least Ubuntu 9.10.
