The latest daily build isnt available atm, but I tried upgrading to the latest xorg etc. and the problem persists, suggesting that the problem is more with xorg than the live cd (i.e the live cd contains the xorg, which is the problem)
 Reverted back to xorg from jaunty and everything is OK.

Apport-collect will be from Karmic Xubuntu, with Jaunty xorg.

I downgraded the following packages:
libx11-data 
x11-xserver-utils
xserver-common
xserver-xorg
xserver-xorg-{
core
input-evdev
input synaptics
video-fbdev
video-s3
video-s3virge
video-savage
video-v4l
video-vesa
}

I havnt been able to get an X log from 1.6.1 
Hope this helps.
 (dammit apport being a *&*&(! bad gateways, and wrong permssions... uug. )
