I re-installed 3D driver and firmware, inserted these lines

Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
Option "DRI" "off"
Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"

into the "Device" section of xorg.conf and now I get no more freeze,
even with 3D installed.
