NVIDIA GeForce 6200 video card.
When booting I see white vertical stripes on screen in place of either the plymouth ubuntu text or the plymouth ubuntu logo. I have attached a photo of the screen at boot. It looks like it is the plymouth text theme that is being used and indeed if I remove plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text my system boots with just a black screen until login.
The same behaviour is exhibited during shutdown.
