Then there must be more than one bug causing a freeze.

The one that can be provoked by the script under the current jauty
kerneln and was obviously fixed in kernels 2.6.29.2 .4 .5 and .6 and
2.6.31-020631rc5. Kernels in between may have reintroduced the bug, as
Juhuu stated (or Juhuu's freezes came from the other bug)...

The second one seems more rare (I haven't seen one yet under 2.6.29.6)
and may even be totally unrelated to the kernel/ATI driver/X11... ?
