I have been happily running Unity 3D on my Oneiric install up until this
morning's updates (done around 8:14AM, according to Software Center).
Then after doing a reboot, I was greeted with a mostly blank desktop,
save a menu bar at the top (for what I assume is Nautilus). See the
attached screenshot. I pretty much lost all GUI ways to start
applications and had to do everything through the Terminal (via
Ctrl+Alt+T) instead; this includes not being able to log out/shutdown.

A temporary workaround I am using is Unity 2D, but Unity 3D was working
before on my system and I would like to get that back. At someone else's
suggestion, I tried installing GNOME Shell but that refuses to run,
dumping me back out to the login screen.

My apologies for the vague description, but I am not sure what went
wrong here. AFAIK, I am (or at least was) using the Nouveau driver for
my integrated NVIDIA graphics. I'll gladly provide any additional
information as requested.
