[Bug 875274] [NEW] Unity3d fails to load with old ~/.config/dconf/user file

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

INSTALL PROCEDURE:
I just installed 11.10 over 11.04. My root / directory and /home directory are on separate partitions, so when choosing installation options I chose "other" and manually selected to format / and use my old /home directory, which means my 11.04 config files still existed after the install.

SYMPTOMS:
I found that after logging in, Unity3d would only show a background image and no GUI (it would not crash or fall back to 2d, just sit there with a background image and a mouse cursor). I could ctrl-alt-delete to logout. I could then login with Unity2d with no problems. The correct video driver was installed, and /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p returned all yesses.

CAUSE AND SOLUTION:
After much trial and error, I found that the problem was an old .config/dconf/user file. I can attach this file if it would help with solving this bug. Moving this file out of the way allowed a new one to be generated, and then Unity3d started as it should.

A possible fix for this bug is to remove, or move, ~/.config/dconf/user
during install, or at least check that it is compatible with the new
system.
