This seems to be the same problem as bug 532047.
So the problem is not really fixed?

I've done:
sudo mv /etc/init/plymouth-splash.conf /etc/init/plymouth-splash.conf.disabled

and added the line vt=7 to   /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf   as below.

[SeatDefaults]
greeter-session=unity-greeter
user-session=ubuntu
vt=7

The login now crashes when I press 2 (ENTER seems to crash it only some of the times ) but ENTER crashes it if I open a terminal window in X and press ENTER in that.
Pressing 2 after login also crashes X.
