This bug effected/effects me as well (i5-2520M), but this is a duplicate
of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+bug/882349  and you can work around it with the instructions here

Robvdl says a proper fix is headed upstream though.

I was able to do the "one shot fix" by compiling the latest intel-gpu-
tools from git, then running as root:

sudo ./intel_reg_write 0x9404 0x00001000
