I was able to fix it. My system was using the fglrx video drivers for my
ATI Radeon video card, although it wasn't clear that this was the cause
of the crashes.
Removing this driver and installing the open-source ati/radeon driver
fixed the crashes.
I found and used the following documents to fully remove the fglrx
drivers, and install the open source ati/radeon drivers. Now the Desktop
Environment is working!
