[Bug 412740] [NEW] no nvidia video desktop since update kernel and packages

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Since updated kernel or package updates the 180 nvidia driver stoped
working on hdd0, the ubuntu on hdd2 is working without nvidia driver. I
updated to nvidia 185.18.31 via f1 desktop(hdd0) so it could be
installed with out xserver runing (will not install with xserver
loaded). Now I have no desktop at all. I can see grub menu, the ubuntu
progress bar, and then nothing. I have tried ctrl + alt +f1 and no joy.
I would like to at least use use the x.config desktop, but I have no
idea how to get it back. I have tried recovery mode but no joy. I also
took the video cars out to run on the motherboard video but the same
result.

system details:
intel d865glc motherboard
nvidia GeForce 6200 video card 256 mb agp/8x
HDD0 western digital 500 gigabyte SATA
HDD1 western digital 300 gigabyte IDE
Dual Boot
ubuntu 9.04 with current updates
Widows XP SP3 (working with new nvidia driver) I do not have email or firefox bookmarks on XP so I really need my ubuntu!!
