Hi Peter,

Since you have an AGP card, one thing to try out is if one of the
alternate AGPModes solves the issue.  The symptoms you describe match up
with the typical use case for that bug.  For more information see this

If that doesn't do it, then please also test against current Karmic
Alpha and verify it still occurs there, and we'll forward it upstream
