I have probably the same problem

with nvidia 180.44 
using KDE 4.3.00 
on Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04) 
on linux-2.6.28-15-generic.

When I choose logout, shutdown or reboot from the K menu, nothing really
happens, only one icon disappears from the system tray (hp-systray) and
plasma does not react to mouseovers anymore (starters on the desktop are
not highlighted onMouseOver); but clicking one of the starters starts
the application as usual.

I can shutdown using Konsole with "sudo shutdown -P now" and reboot with "sudo reboot". 
To just log out, I need to zap X (ctrl alt backspace) or go to another tty and "sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart".

Please tell me if you need more information from me!
