I am unable to adjust the contrast on an HP laptop, and have not seen
any solutions in the forums.  Viewing photos with Image Viewer or F-Spot
viewer, photos are washed out in bright areas, as if blooming.  Same
problem for  videos under VLC player.  In Vista, this also occurred, and
the ATI Catalyst software contrast adjustment fixed it.  There is a
keypad adjustment for brightness, but nothing I can find for contrast.
I don't see any reference to a software adjustment under Ubuntu.  I have
experimented with Gamma, but it does not have the desired effect.

  The system is a DV7-1232 with an ATI HD 3200 video card.  It is configured as a Vista home premium and Ubuntu Intrepid dual boot.  Lspci shows: “01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS780M/RS780MN [Radeon HD 3200 Graphics]
”.  The screen is a 17” brightview.

I followed the instructions at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver#Tweaking%20The%20Driver ,
but did not modify xorg.conf, as the instructions say “From Ubuntu 7.10
and onwards, the driver and server autodetect most settings. You can
often just take away your xorg.conf and it will run fine”.  I did try to
edit the xorg.conf file, but made an error, and reloaded  my backup.

My /etc/X11/xorg.conf looks like this:

Incidentally, I did not notice a contrast setting in the ATI fglrx
driver when I experimented with it.
