My apologies, your responses got me thinking that the USB2VGA adapter may actually be supported, just not configured properly.
I did some research and found in fact that it's been supported for several years in linux, and modprobe picks it up in Ubuntu, it's just not picked up for X configuration.

I've set it up to work with my ATI card now after reading various
threads in ubuntuforums, the only remaining issue is trying to get
Xinerama working with it.
