manually installed the new version,
apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-ati
xserver-xorg-video-ati:

gdm loops is still an issue.
Only adding DRI 0 to xorg.conf enables login.

attaching dmesg to this post.
Will do another fresh start with clean xorg.conf and then supplying the
Xorg.0.log
