After installing from the Karmic CD the problem remains as in Intrepid.
I installed the ati drivers from the PPA.
It appears that the ATI driver is not used and Xserver falls back to the VESA driver.
(Rebooting in this mode does not exhibit the problem, though I've no idea whether it works in Intrepid with the VESA driver.)

Attached is file, bug_357497_dmesg+xorglog.tar.gz, containing :
dmesg.txt - dmesg from the last boot (with new ati driver)
Xorg.0.log-original - Xorg.0.log after initial install
Xorg.0.log-new - Xorg.0.log after installation of drivers from PPA
