I tried a backport of the Karmic kernel to Jaunty with the patch listed
in that bug  + the latest xorg-edgers packages and I still have the same
issue with compiz freezing.  I am unable to switch over to the Karmic
install at this time, but the symptoms and general system response is
the same on my (backport-heavy) Jaunty install on this system.

Once the patched kernel lands in Karmic I will test again there and (if
I still have the problem) post my Karmic dmesg and lspci information.
