[Bug 414330] Re: When using vesa driver system with S3 Inc. VT8375 [ProSavage8 KM266/KL266] crashes when leaving graphics mode

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-vesa

  System with S3 ProSavage8 running 8.04.3 LTS crashes on logout

  The 8.04.3 LTS system runs Ok, but crashes when switching to a text
  console, when logging out (to change users), or when shutting down. (See
  below)

  This is the same system mentioned in comments under my name in bug
  #217004.

  Since that report, I installed Debian instead, then recently tried to
  install Ubuntu again. The display and display controller were not
  recognized when trying to boot live CDs from 7.10 through 9.04.

  I ended up being able to boot the 6.06.1 LTS desktop CD, and install
  from that. For this version, it took several probes for the software to
  determine the proper display mode. I had selected 'safe mode' and an
  explicit 1024x768 resolution in the boot menus before installing.

  This system ran successfully, but on each boot it took several attempts
  for the driver to determine the correct mode.

  Then I did the online upgrade to the latest LTS version:

    Show Ubuntu version and kernel version
    DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
    DISTRIB_RELEASE=8.04
    DISTRIB_CODENAME=hardy
    DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS"
    Linux billy 2.6.24-24-386 #1 Fri Jul 24 22:05:29 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

  This system, after the upgrade, boots successfully. The screen
  resolution is arrived at more quickly. I was able to install apache2,
  php, mysql, etc for a web site. However, any action involving changing
  to text mode or a console display results in the system crashing, with a
  blank screen. The system becomes inaccessible over the network, either
  through http or ssh - it's quite dead.

  So - ctrl-alt-F2 etc to a console -> crash. Logout -> crash. Shutdown ->
  crash.

  This is with the VESA driver - I later obtained an updated xserver-xorg-
  video-savage driver from Tormod Volden which solves the problem.

  This system is set up to triple-boot among XP, Ubuntu, and FreeBSD. I
  just installed Xorg and Gnome on the FreeBSD partition - the vesa driver
  on that exhibits the same problem.

  I will attach config files and logs collected shortly after experiencing
  the crash.
