Confirmed on karmic daily liveCD from 09/09/09 with a nvidia 9400M graphic card (regular card, not hybrid).
NV doesn't support this card, but for some reason the vesa fallback does not work; the user is sent to a text only login prompt.

vesa then starting X works fine.
