[Bug 429384] Re: [karmic i386] X hangs (intel 965gm)

** Summary changed:

- random hangs of karmic
+ [karmic i386] X hangs (intel 965gm)

** Description changed:

  I'm using

  Distributor ID:	Ubuntu
  Description:	Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
  Release:	9.10
  Codename:	karmic

on a toshiba satellite p205 with intel x3100 965gm graphics.

The system is up to date.

I've installed karmic alpha 5 several days ago, and since then have
experienced 3-4 hags a day. About a year ago, there were also some hangs
with 8.04, but that problem was due to a bug in the wireless driver, and
that bug was fixed soon after it appeared.

The hangs seem to occur random, but last 3 of them followed a pattern :
firefox with a big flash presentation running on the second monitor, and
some activity in visual paradigm for uml on the primary monitor. E.g.
click some option in the right click menu, press ok in some message box,
  etc, after which gui hanged.

+ I'm not sure that the bug can be reproduced, because the same sequence
+ of actions may work for a long time until a hang occurs.
+
The bug may be related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
  /xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/413933, but it's a little bit more
- different. I am able to switch to a terminal with ctrl_alt_fX, and no
- need to login through ssh.
+ different.
+
+ I am able to switch to a terminal with ctrl+alt+f1, therefore there is no need to login through ssh.
+ ctrl+alt+backspace doesn't restart X.
+ Mouse pointer still moves.
+ The keyboard LED doesn't come on when hitting the CAPSLOCK key, but the NUMLOCK's LED does.
+
+ The music player (audacious) plays until the current song ends.

As recommended in one of the comments of bug 413933, I've followed instructions from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze#How%20to%20Get%20a%20Batchbuffer%20Dump%20%28-intel%20only%29 . Actually, today the system froze twice, and after first time I've restarted gdm with
  sudo INTEL_DEBUG=batch /etc/init.d/gdm restart
and on the second hang have collected the required info.

Also, each time after X hanged, it continued to use about 70% of cpu (on
a singe core), aside with gnome-panel, which used 30% (I suppose on the
same core, because it was loaded to 100%, and the other to about 10%).

Yesterday I've tried to collect info with apport-bug <pid of xorg>,
while xorg was in a "hanged state", but apport have never ended it's
job, nor even after one hour, during which it printed a lot of dots.
I've seen bug reports about this behaviour of apport-bug when run
  against a hanged xorg.
