One data point: Could it be that the switch from grub to grub-pc changed
things? Previously when connecting a monitor via DVI before booting, I
would see the grub screen on the external monitor.

With grub-pc it seems, that while it will boot up after the timeout, the
menu is never shown, not on the external monitor and not on the macbook
one (remains black).

macat, do you experience the same, or is it just here?
