Re: [Bug 370292] Re: [i855] X freezing on intel 855GM

Alright Mike! really thank you for this information.

I will sign-up to the site and post (event hough I was a bit worry about
the certification issue), but I cannot explain in technical terms as you
did, so I am sure I don't stand a chance. But who knows? I will keep you
with an update if there is any output.

I won't touch custom kernels. My question was related to the Official
Ubuntu kernel: when there is an update (current is 2.6.28-15-generic 2),
do I have to re-install the old ati driver after the kernel update, or
it is not related (noob question maybe)

And again, yes. I will wait for the final release of Karmic + a few more
months, see how it goes on the ubuntu forum. You did not experienced any
computability issue using the old driver on Karmic, you confirm it is
safe? I hope that won't change with the final release.

I am glad, because I now can wait a few more months before purchasing a
new laptop. I owe you that.

You know linux well! What about the other distributions (Debian, open
suze, Fedora) do they have the same problem with notebooks? I use Linux
Unbuntu for a month or so, I am now reading a few Apress manuals (Linux
Bible and bash commands) to get by. The conception and usability is way
better than windows, but then come all these annoying things: bad
drivers, printer not recognized, FN keys not working. It is not much,
but I was wondering if another distro (even a pay one - like Red hat)
would be better. On the other hand all perhaps all these problems might
not occur on a newer notebook and printer?
