This same thing has happened to me more than once.  I was just trying to
open OpenOffice and my X session stopped.  I was left with a login
screen.  As you can imagine, this is very annoying.

When I logged back in, I was left with the following in /var/log/syslog:

Sep 17 13:45:55 linux13 gdm[4043]: WARNING: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0
