[Bug 431262] [NEW] gdm/X restart when switching to virtual terminal

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Gdm / X restarts to login screen, when switching to virtual terminal (ctrl+alt+f1) while it is changing screen resolution or frequency. This can be demonstrated eg. when you switch to virtual terminal just after you submitted login and password on the login screen. Gdm restarts and you have to login again.
Same crash occurs, when you execute fullscreen game in Wine and before game displays its contents, you switch to virtual terminal.

When observing this problem first time (maybe a year ago) I thought it
is a bug of Wine. When I tried switching to virtual terminal while
logging in, I decided to report this, because it is probably different
bug.

Bug is IMHO in gdm, xserver or xrandr.

gdm 2.27.90-0ubuntu6
xserver-xorg 1:7.4+3ubuntu5

Release Ubuntu karmic (9.10), but older releases are (at least
partially) affected too.

** Affects: xorg-server (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
