I think I am experiencing the same issue. Again Dell Inspiron 1501 with
ati 200m card and ubuntu jaunty. The external monitor is hp 1955  with
native resolution 1280x1024@60. The monitor is not recognized and i use
this script to set the resolution:

xrandr --newmode "1280x1024_60.00"  108.88  1280 1360 1496 1712  1024 1025 1028 1060 -HSync +Vsync
xrandr --addmode VGA-0 1280x1024_60.00
xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1280x800
xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1280x1024_60.00
xrandr --output VGA-0 --above LVDS
