I have this bug on a Dell E6400 with the same graphics chip as mentioned
above from Intel.  I think this may be a duplicate of bug 316887.

For me xrandr seems to work, thought he GUI does not.  Here is the
xrandr command for those who need a work around.

$  xrandr --output LVDS --auto --output VGA --auto --same-as LVD
