[Bug 436530] [NEW] [Karmic] After boot, stuck at blank screen; need to press Alt+F7 to get X to begin starting

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When booting Karmic, it grinds away for a bit, then suddenly stops with
a completely blank screen. Pressing any key shows (what I would guess to
be vt01) a console. I need to manually press Alt+F7, at which point the
X server suddenly starts doing it's thing, I get the Ubuntu Karmic
spotlight image for a while, and eventually a GDM login screen.

Ideally the system would boot straight to GDM.
