This happens to me too on jaunty, but only about 5% of the time upon
resume. I also have the same line in daemon.log:

rep gdm /var/log/daemon.log
Oct 23 20:10:06 perseus gdm[27647]: WARNING: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0 

The is on a Lenovo laptop, with intel graphics (GMA 4500 I believe).
Hopefully fixed in Karmic.
